If you're reading this, there's a good chance you're interested in applying for one of many character positions on One Piece Role-Play Wikia. However, desiring something doesn't necessarily deem you fit for it. Allow me to elaborate on this further.

Trafalgar Law

Trafalgar D. Water Law is a character from the canon series who is a former member of the Shichibukai.

There is really no easy way for me to say this. In saying this, I am going to sound like a total (insert curse word here), however, there really is no other way around it. So put your big boy pants on prepare yourself for a full cup of reality.

As with any other circumstance in life, in order to acquire a character position comes with some prerequisites. More often than not, I have found users who have no role-play experience whatsoever attempt to apply their character for an Admiral position or a Yonko position or what have you. Now is it rude on my part to deny a user for this reason? Or course not. You must understand that as the Gamemaster of this wikia, it is my duty to keep things in an orderly balance. If anything, it is arrogance on behalf of the user who is applying!

Think about it for a moment. Put yourself in the shoes of this person: you've been role-playing for 8 months; in that time, you've created 40 characters, all of whom are less than 10k bytes in length. You hop around from character to character, claiming this one will be your new main, only to get a new idea (which by the way, you think is an idea no one in the entire would but you could have ever thought of) and suddenly that character (because you happened to have created it) just has to be better than everyone else's.

That sort of bullshit isn't going to work around here. Let me get my point across very, very, very thoroughly. We are in no rush to approve positions on this site. Just because there is 3 Yonko doesn't mean we are desperate for a 4th; just because there happens to be 1 Admiral doesn't mean we are oh-so hopeless for 3; just because there is 2 Shichibukai doesn't mean we're running around looking for there to be 7. The sooner you realize this the better.

We are not going to approve characters just for the sake of filling up positions. If your character is worthy enough, then he or she will claim that title without fault.

Now that we've touched base on it already, let's get a more detailed look at what it takes to come into position of a character position here on this site.

  • Experience: I can't stress this one enough. Really, I can't. Experience is so underrated. You may not be the best writer in the world, but if you have experience in collaborating with others and thinking with a team first mentality, then there's a good chance you can have your character approved even with a few grammar mistakes here and there across your article. If you're a newcomer with less than 2 years of role-playing experience under your belt, then really ask yourself why you're even bothering to apply for a position in the first place. It's stupidity if you ask me.
    • One Piece Knowledge: Okay, this is a rather big one that goes hand-in-hand with experience. If you've never seen a single episode of One Piece or read a single chapter from the manga, how dare you so much as think to apply for a position (yes, there have been people). I understand that this place is suddenly popping because a lot of the other mangas out there have recently ended (Naruto, Bleach, Fairytail, to name a few). I get that people want to hop on the bandwagon and join in on the fan, but come on now. If you're unfamiliar with the universe we operate in and will constantly be in doubt over things pertaining to it, then please for the sake of my own sanity, do not bother applying.
  • Accuracy to Canon: Much like the latter bullet point, this one pertains to your overall familiarity with the canon series. Since we are crafting our characters from Oda's genius, this makes a lot of sense. In simpler terms, make sure your character could exist in canon if need be.
  • Article Formatting: This is another big one. If your article does not go according to the site Manual of Style, then I have no reason to even speak to you. Honestly, it is your job to take a look at that prior to even creating an article here. Just imagine the number of applicants I've already dealt with over the course of the last few years; yes, it's a pretty outrageous amount. It's at a point where I will not respond to your request if I notice that the page is not formatted properly. To ensure your page is formatted accordingly, literally look at one of the canon pages on One Piece Wiki and make sure yours looks similar to it.
    • References: What?! This has its own section?! Yes, yes, yes! There is nothing more sexy than references on an article, believe me. References that are properly coded. References let readers know that there is actually a bit of merit to what is inscribed on the character's article, and that it hasn't entirely just been pulled out of the writer's arse.
  • Relevance: Is your character brand new and not known to anyone on the site? I don't give a damn if you have one of those fancy pages totaling 100k in bytes; you have a better chance landing a position with a 15k byte article if he or she has been apart of several role-plays and is respected amongst the community. Shichibukai in canon themselves are among the most notorious pirates in the world; to such an extent that their name is known to pretty much everyone across the entirety of the sea. Because we pride ourselves on following canon as much as humanly possible, we want to make sure that our characters fit that criteria as well. Characters that are built from the ground up through role-play have a 5x better chance of being approved for a position.

Conclusion[]

Quick little informative piece here. Hopefully you all are now more familiar with applying for characters. Hopefully this will stop some of you nooblets from rushing yourselves. Remember, respect is not gained, its earned. If you're new to the series or new to role-playing in general, then take your time. Enjoy the ride and learn as much as you can. Create characters that aren't the most reputed or aren't the "strongest" so that you can grow along with them.
